Todays Feature: How to Spod - Dan demonstrates the importance of accurate casting to build up a decent bed of feed on which to cast to
Spodding is a way of delivering a wide variety of baits to an area that you can then cast your hook bait over the top of. The spod itself is similar to a grounbait feeder but it has one end blocked off, however, a spod has buoyancy at the bottom, this allows it to empty itself on landing.
The key to spodding is accurate casting. Bear this in mind as the feature continues! Dan had a 3kg bag of hemp that he planned to spod with 6 different casts to put a bed of bait tight to the island, as shown in the diagrams below (the first image shows Dan's choice of spodding area, the second image shows where the spod landed):
Instead of accurate casting of the spod to build up a bed of feed upon which to cast, Dan spread 3kg of hemp over an area just under the size of a football pitch! Once again the spod god fails to hit his targets!
Spodding Tips:
What did/should Dan have learnt from his spodding experience:
Fish an area you can easily cast and spod to.
Pointless fishing at 70 yards if you struggle to cast that far and can't cast to the same spot twice.
Cast just beyond the market float, wind in, once the spod is level with the marker float place the line clip in place.
When reeling in the spod keep the rod high to allow the spod to skip across the top of the water.
THE CRAP ANGLER
I AM A BAD CARP ANGLER
I am possibly the worst carp angler there is. I am messy, crap at casting, but somehow I seem to catch carp!
