Todays Feature: Panshill Wood Fishery
Dan “Not John Wilson” and myself, The Crap Angler went for a short
evening session at Panshill Wood Fishery, near Bicester in
Oxfordshire. Panshill Wood Fishery has four lakes, these are Pans
Lake, Hill Lake, Wood Lake and Fishery Lake. We arrived at about 5pm
on Friday 29th May 2009 and fished the specimen lake : Hill Lake.
This small lake contains mixed fish up to 2lb and carp from 14-32lb.
This was the first time that I had fished this year and my first cast
was straight into a bush on the left hand corner of one of the
islands, typical! So after redoing my rig I cast out again with a
kobra method feeder filled with Special G Groundbait and 2 14mm
raspberry boilies. On my second rod I fished a 20mm pineapple plus
boilie topped with a small bit of fake sweetcorn. I fished this in
the margins to my right in a patch of shadow cast on the water’s
surface. I missed a run on this rod after about half and hour and so
reset this rod to pretty much the same spot and topped the swim up
with a few smaller 15mm pineapple plus boilies.
After an hour or so, maybe a bit longer my left hand rod screamed off
and I struck into a carp. Well, technically it was a carp but on
landing it, Dan would not stop laughing. We didn’t weigh it but this
mirror carp was probably half a pound and that is being generous. I
think Dan might still be laughing now such was his amusement at my
“specimen”.
About half an hour later Dan came over for a chat, but his approach
was fairly vocal, you could hear him chuckling from about 10 metres
away and it turned into an overpowering laugh in your face once he
arrived! Suddenly, my right hand bite alarm started buzzing, I struck
into this fish and straight away I knew it was bigger than the
previous fish! After a bit of a struggle and a bit of panic from me
that my clutch might have been set a bit tight Dan landed it in my
large carp net. Then, Dan started laughing again, but a bit louder
this time. I was surprised as the fish looked pretty good to me
definitely a double figure fish, then it clicked. The pole had broken
off of the landing net, so the net was just sitting in the water with
no pole, I managed to grab just the net and we took the fish over to
the unhooking mat. This common carp weighed exactly 13lb although we
were both thought it looked a bit bigger, but the scales don’t lie!
I didn’t get any bites after this Common Carp and we stayed fishing
until about 9.30pm. As we left Dan was still laughing, this could
have been due to my “specimen carp” or the 6 Stella’s he’d drunk
either way I wasn’t bothered and actually had the last laugh because
Dan blanked again!!!
