The Crap Angler PB: 26lb 11oz Sponsor: Not Ron Thompson!
Todays Feature: Monkey See, Monkey Do!
I fished a Northamptonshire lake on a Tuesday afternoon in late September 2009. The lake was busy, only a few spare pegs to
be had. Therefore I had little choice as to where I could fish. I spoke to everyone who was fishing on the way to my swim.
Everyone said it was very slow going, only one person had caught a fish all day and this was a small bream. I noticed on the
way to my peg that everyone was spodding or using PVA bags on every cast. As there had been no fish caught I decided to fish
a single hook bait on both rods with no PVA bag, stringer or spod mix.
Why copy everyone else when none of them are catching?
I fished one rod tight to an island infront of me and the other rod in the margin to my left. After about an hour and a half
I had a small drop back bite on the island rod, I turned the line back onto the spool into it's original position and then it
screamed off, FISH ON! After a spirited fight I landed a 15lb Common Carp, unfortunately no pictures as Dan "Not John
Wilson" was fishing the far bank and took too long to arrive so I put the carp back with no photo. The action was pretty
slow from here on in and I packed up about 3/4 of a an hour before I usually would have done to go and have a chat with Dan
and The Cramped Angler on the far bank.
As always when Dan and Simon are together it's usually a pretty good laugh and this evening was no exception. I chatted to
Simon about a fishing in general and then we got discussing his new throwing stick. Having never used a throwing stick
before I was intriguied. Simon said they were good once you got used to them but they definately took a bit of practice.
Next thing you know, out comes the throwing stick and a few boilies and off I go... The first throw was with 3 boilies in
the stick, I have no idea where any of them went, but not in the lake was the answer. Second throw, 3 more boilies, 2
entered the water with the 3rd landing somewhere, no idea where though! The 2 boilies didn't enter the water anywhere near
where I was aiming, I quickly gave up and thought about how to improve my technique - more to follow soon!
There were a few showing fish crashing on the surface and so I suggested to Simon to cast a bait on one of their heads. He
duly obliged with a single boilie, within a few minutes he had a little bite that he missed. So waited for another fish to
crash and aimed at that spot. He fired a powerful cast in the direction of the carp but there was an almighty snap and some
tackle entered the lake, not to return! Dan and I laughed. Then suddenly Dan's new Delkims that his beautiful girlfriend
bought him let of their dulcet tone which echoed the quality of the purchase. Five
minutes before he was going to pack up he was about to land a fish. I slid the net under Dan's favourite species of fish -
The Bream!

After I got home I had received an email from "Not Des Taylor" as shown below:
I have recently been reflecting upon the number of 'crack off's' I have experienced (line snapping during casting) and can
only put it down to the following:-
- Main line past shelf life
- Too powerful casting action
- Incompetant casting method (not releasing line with index finger in time)
I am resisting changing the mainline due to the cost factor, however, I am currently spending £15 - £20 per fishing session
on leads, end tackle
etc.
Oh I laughed! But on a serious note, it's possible the line is past it's shelf life, but I'm sure Simon would notice this.
So I have discounted this thought. I don't believe it is due to incompetent casting, as Simon is not incompetent, so I
figure it must just be down to too powerful a casting action, maybe you should upgrade to some Ron Thompson beach casters? :)

| I AM A BAD CARP ANGLER |
| I am possibly the worst carp angler there is. I am messy, crap at casting, but somehow I seem to catch carp! |
