Angler File: The Crap Angler also sometimes known as 'NotRonThompson' UK PB: 26lb 11oz Common Carp Sponsor: Not Ron Thompson
Todays Feature: How to catch a clonker - you spawny bastard!
Dan "NotJohnWilson" and myself "The Crap Angler" visited a mystery lake in Northamptonshire arriving at around 6am. Dan fished one of the islands, infront of it in the middle and also to the right hand side of it. I fished one island and a channel inbetween the 2 islands.
Dan had the first run of the day. His left hand rod's alarm started ringing at full volume (a flock of geese all flew off thinking an air raid was immenent) and his yellow bobbin rose sharply. "NotJohnWilson" struck violently, the fish was on, but somehow the line was tangled in the bobbin and the fox stalker pod was lifting off the ground with the rod! Dan asked for help. In stepped The Crap Angler to play the fish just holding onto the line with my hands, whilst "NotJohnWilson" lay the rod down and untangled the mess. Surprisingly, the fish got off! It was probably only a bream knowing Dan.
Dan hit into the first fish of the day, a nice 15lb 14oz Common Carp on single fake sweetcorn. Dan was pleased with this good looking dark common carp, but we decided to fish this venue to try and hit a 20lber. Around mid-day Dan had a "clonking" run and after a pretty wild fight (Dan is used to catching pasties!) a 20lb 8oz Common Carp was landed and new PB for "NotJohnWilson", he was over the moon. This personal best fish was caught on double fake sinking corn, like the first carp.
At this point in the day I was starting to get a bit nervous about blanking. So I decided to move my left hand rod into the margins on my left, as I had been constantly throwing in small offerings of sweetcorn and a bit of groundbait. I put the left rod about 3 foot to my left and about 1-1/2 feet out on double sweetcorn (real). Dan came over and said, "you won't catch anything there!", I told him that I was fairly confident as I saw a little dent in the reeds that I presumed meant it might be a regular feeding spot. He wasn't convinced. About 2 hours after moving the left rod, I got a run and landed nice 12lb common carp, I wasn't going to blank so I was happy, but still wanted to catch a 20!
I set up the rod again with double sweetcorn and placed it in the same position. I also re-baited my other rod with a strawberry boilie and managed the cast of my life and got it right under a tree up tight against the right hand island. I would never be able to make this cast again if I tried - as they say, "the sun shines on a dog's arse every once in a while".
About an hour and a half later my left hand Ron Thompson bite alarm started bleeping like mad while I was next to Dan and so I started sprinting to my rod, well it was more of a waddle, and I struck into the fish. Immediately I knew it was a big fish, it was unlike anything I had ever hooked into before, it didn't really move it just felt heavy, really heavy! I made a point of telling this to Dan, several times, with words like, "fuck me, it's massive!" or "it's a clonker, I've never felt anything like this before"... to cut a long story short, it WAS massive, a Common Carp and it weighed a stonking 26lb 11oz and a new PB for The Crap Angler!
The excitement was almost too much to take, I couldn't stop smiling and the adrenalin rush was like nothing else, then 10 minutes after my first 20lb+ fish I had a run on my right hand rod from under the tree. This fish didn't feel as heavy but swam around more, but already I knew that this was another 20lb fish. It looked like a 20 in the net too and on the unhooking mat, but to claim a 20lb fish is not possible as somehow through my excitement I managed to drop the fish back into the lake before I had weighed it or photographed it, it even left a small imprint on a patch of reeds, well about a 20lb imprint! I guess this is one more reason why I am The Crap Angler.
Please note that the fish did not come to any harm.
Tips for catching a clonker:
- Fising the margins can be just as productive as fishing an island or feature
- Ignore Dan "NotJohnWilson"'s advice at least 50% of the time!
- It's better to be lucky than good!
- "You catch more fish if you are awake than asleep" said our fishing friend at the lake named Jim.
